Perennial Flower Beds

We all like nature. No matter where we live, we all want to have plenty of natural sun light, and some vegetation around. In fact, when we want to escape the noise and pollution of our day to day lives in the cities, where do we go? We go to places and hotels that feature big areas with plenty of water, natural sunlight and, of course, beautiful vegetation with plenty of flowers.

Flowers are so beautiful and attract us so much that they have been used by humans for centuries, with some people attributing magical or religious powers to them. Even today, some flowers are thought to have special meanings, like love, honor, respect, and grief.

Because of their beauty, it is no wonder that people who can, prepare flower beds in the front of their houses or in the backyards. When preparing such a flower bed, there are basically two types of flowers to choose from; annuals and perennials. Annuals are flower plants that will last only a season and die, usually in winter. Perennials are long living flower plants that last for several seasons. Although annuals are usually flashier and more colorful, if you want something that will last, perennial flower beds are the way to go.

The main advantage of perennial flower beds is that they will not need to be replanted every year, as would be the case with annuals. This is specially comfortable for people who don’t have much time or much skill or experience with gardening, and don’t want to go to the process twice. Of course, you could hire a gardener who has experience with perennial flower beds, but part of the satisfaction is to design, create and plant it yourself, even if it’s just once.

When buying plants for perennial flower beds, make sure that the ones you get are the appropriate ones for your area’s climate and soil. A lot of people buy plants for their perennial flower gardens only basing their decisions on how pretty the flowers look. Then they get disappointed when their perennial flower beds dies even if they take good care of them. Some factors you need to take into account is whether your soil is acid, neutral, or alkaline, how many hours of sunlight the area gets, the lowest temperature in winter and the highest one in summer, how much snow you get, etc.

Planting perennial flower beds isn’t really difficult, but it requires a fair amount of work. If you don’t have any experience with perennial flower beds, be prepared to spend a day or two with yours. You might want to ask friends who have perennial flower beds already to help you or at least to be with you and give you advice as you work. Don’t worry, once they’re there, they can’t help but get down and help you.
